2 Samuel 22:51 - Your Spotlight To Greatness
Step 1: Pray. Select.
Today, as my prayer time began, I was led to search for verses regarding God’s promises of protection.
As I read through the plethora of options, I came across 2 Samuel 22. The chapter is rich with God’s safeguard. The verse that stood out amongst the rest was verse 51.
Let’s begin our journey there, friends!
Step 2: Write. Read. Circle
2 Samuel 22:51 - “He is the tower of salvation to His king, And shows mercy to His anointed, To David and his descendants forevermore.”
After reading the scripture three times, the following words stood out amongst the others:
The Tower Of Salvation
His King
His Anointed
His Descendants
Step 3: Re-Write
With a focus on the words that stood out, here is the personalized sentence that came alive in my heart. Don't forget, if you are doing this alongside me today, make sure to add your name to your unique sentence:
Jennifer, the tower of salvation, His King, His anointed, His descendants.
Step 4: Visualize
As I think about my unique sentence from the Holy Spirit, I can’t help but think about how everything is ordained by God.
I picture God’s bright light shining down from the heavens like a ray of sunshine breaking through dense clouds. Poignant beams with laser focus highlight a place on a large plot of land in the distance.
I run up a small rolling hill to better see where this beam touches the earth. I see a wooden fence outlining a pasture where sheep are peacefully grazing.
I see the light does not focus on any sheep but a boy playing King. He is pretending to slay monsters and then falls onto his knees, bowing to something I cannot see. The boy is no more than six or eight years old. Something about him is beyond mature, and he talks to the light. After he is still, humbling, bowing, and listening to everything the light is telling him, he stands up and dances.
This must have been David as a child. He never cared about glory. He was alone in this field, and the light always shined upon him. He was dirty yet totally unashamed and unassuming of his uncleanliness.
He was alone, but not abandoned. God was with him and favored him and his joyous heart. Now that I think about it, King David had an uncanny ability to follow God later in life whenever he encountered a battle, and in turn, the people followed him.
He first looked to God to provide everything he was blessed with. And yes, God already knew the journey of this special King. God knew he would be victorious over the giant and the lion. He also knew he would fall when he slept with Bathsheba, whose name, by the way, means “daughter of the oath,” which separated him from building the altar for God, which he thought he would previously do.
He is so young and so innocent. What a blessing to see him in his youth. Great glory comes in small packages.
I have a question, so I move straight to Step 5.
Step 5: Ask. Seek
The question that came to mind is:
Holy Spirit, does David know all that is going to happen to him at this point? Did you show him glimpses of who he was going to be?
Step 6: Hear. Write. Receive
“No. He has no idea of the greatness inside of him. He is not arrogant, for that has not developed in his flesh yet. He is pure here. But, I am getting him used to being clothed in my glory with his cloak and crown of weeds he has made upon his head. As we teach others about God’s glory, we must let His unveiling happen in his perfect time. If you knew everything you went through before this point, would you have made different decisions or chosen a different path to avoid pain and gain time? Again, time is irrelevant to your Father. It is a man-made, fleshly creation. It has no weight where I am in eternity. The important thing is David soaks in the light, spotlighting who he will become even if, for now, it is only in His imagination. ”
Another question comes to mind.
Holy Spirit, how did he know to dress up like a King at such a young age if he was in this field alone and never saw a King?
“That is precisely the point. Yes. He encountered me. I gave Him the vision. Even his family does not see what I show him. It is why I sometimes took his father’s love away; he was not his father's favorite child. Hidden away. So he could see greatness beyond what his father and brothers could see. David is limitless. This is where rules don’t apply. If I showed him and told him, David knows it will happen. If it can happen in his mind, then it is done. There is no question. The greatest thing David learned during his youth was to hear my voice. This is where he became more powerful than everyone else in his family. He needed this power to carry out his life and, through his descendants, birth the Messiah. This is why your savior only spoke to me on the cross. He knew how to hear my voice and trust in my promise.”
Step 7: Pray. Confirm
Today, I feel honored to witness a version of David as a child—the great King as an innocent, joyous little boy. This tells me so much about the process God has in store for each of us. He carefully reveals our destiny one step at a time, so when we are ready to be crowned in the spotlight of his glory, we say, “Here I am, God. Take me!”
I pray that today and every day, I will remember that if God says it is done, it is done.
I seal this prayer with the blood of Jesus - Amen!
